We've had this for a couple of months, and so far it's done exactly what it needs to do. Only two things about it are less than perfect: 1) it's hard to see the caller information in low light, and 2) if there are new calls, a little red light continues to blink until you clear them all out. Overall, though, it's doing exactly what we bought it to do, and is a good value for the price.

Someone else correctly pointed out the inaccessible battery compartment. He had speculated that the problem was limited to the units produced in 2004. Not sure the problem is limited. Mine was purchased in 2007 (although may have been produced in 2004??). The cover for the batter compartment cannot be opened. Had I made any greater effort than I did, I would have broken the cover. Who approves the design of stuff like this, and why is there apparently no quality check before it gets out the door. Will never know how this item might have performed since I couldn't turn it on. Lost all interest after failure to insert batteries.

I've only had this caller ID for a month and a very satisfied with it. Price is right. Received in a short time and arrived in good condition. Love the large number display, Timer, and Call back features. I've had no problem reading the display. I bought this to use with an old speakerphone. The feature I disliked is that the line cord that connects to the telephone jack is permanently attached and not very long. I have 3 other caller ID's and none of them have permanent attached cords. I had to move my phone to a different place so the cord would reach to the telephone jack. For this reason I rated it 4 stars.

The item I was seeking was one I could see across the room either by having a large display or illumination. The info indicates a large display, but in realty it cannot be read further than arms length. It is not illuminated so night time viewing does require turning on the lights. The unit does display the necessary information but the unit cannot be wall mounted (only sitting on the desk or table).

Love it! We had problems with Radio Shack caller ID's that have a backlit display and a flashing light for new calls. We were changing the batteries every 2 weeks. We had one of these GEs that does not have the flashing light and haven't changed the battery in a year. Also it's much easier to read from all angles. A great product !!

* Large Display
* Low cost
* Holds 70 numbers
* Redial feature
* EZ installed

BIG Dis-likes
* Battery cover is VERY Very hard to remove.
* Batteries need to be replaced once month.
* Doses not have AC Adapter capability.
* Displays contrast is dimly lit.
* The caller ID size is larger then described.
* When second line beeps in, it causes the ID to temp hang up the line you are on. And this is noticeable by both parties'. (You and caller 1). I have a VERY big issue with this problem. I have change the phone I use, swapped caller ID with my wife's.

Over all disappointed with this Item. How come manufacture cant get a clue about user interface and real customer needs?

I bought two of these units in March 2003. I needed "Call Waiting Caller ID" capability and bought these units after an awful experience with Radio Shack's comparable product. I was immediately impressed by how much better these units worked, and indeed they do everything well. They even have a call timer (which I wasn't aware of). The only bad news is that I've had one of them fail. A few weeks ago it started complaining of low batteries, even though I'd put batteries in both units at the same time. Removing the batteries then putting them back in solved the problem for a week or two, but then the problem came back. Finally, the problem came back for good ... even new batteries couldn't solve it. Then the display went nutso, it started displaying the call counter even though the unit wasn't hooked up. It did that even after having no batteries in it for several days (I thought that might reset it). So I've sent the unit back to the company for repair (Texas). We'll see. The other unit continues to work fine. I like this unit well enough that I'm even considering buying a third one for another room ... and keeping my fingers crossed.

I purchased my Caller ID box at Target for $9.99. But, I had to return the first one I purchased because I could not open the battery compartment even though I used a screw driver. It was frozen shut. So, I went back to Target, returned it and bought another one and it opened fine. However, I noticed that the date on the back of the second one I bought showed 2006. The first one showed 2004. So, maybe try to avoid buying the 2004 version. I tried calling my home number and noticed that the display is large and readable. Although I have only had it one day, it seems to work just fine.

I came to Amazon to replace this unit, and was surprised to see it on the top of the list when I searched for Caller ID. This thing runs on 3 AA batteries and it seems to like to eat them rather quickly. The unit is always on, showing the number of calls it has received. If there are no calls, it will display "No Calls".

The Contrast control can be set to help, but often I've see it reset to it's default setting.
